Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He died after a long illness. As the 14th Prime Minister of the country, he led the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for two consecutive terms. Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was the Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was also the Governor of the Reserve Bank. There is a wave of mourning across the country due to his death. Education of former PM Manmohan Singh
He completed his matriculation from Punjab University in 1948. After that he received his further education from Cambridge University, UK. In 1957, he obtained a first class honors degree in economics. After this, in 1962, he did D. Phil in Economics from Nuffield College, Oxford University. He criticized the export-based trade policy in India in his book ‘Exports and Self-Reliance and Development Prospects in India’.
Manmohan Singh was also the Secretary General of the South Commission
After this, he worked as a teacher at Punjab University and Delhi School of Economics, which shows his academic excellence. Meanwhile, he also worked for the UNCTAD Secretariat for a few years. On this basis, he was appointed as the Secretary General of the South Commission in Geneva in 1987 and 1990.
In 1971, Dr. Manmohan Singh joined the Ministry of Commerce as an economic adviser. In 1972, he was appointed as the Chief Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Finance. He served as Secretary of the Ministry of Finance; Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission; Chairman of the Reserve Bank of India; Advisor to the Prime Minister; Chairman of the University Grants Commission.
Several legal reforms were made for the post of RBI Governor
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 16-09-1982 to 14-01-1985. During his tenure, extensive legal reforms relating to the banking sector were carried out and a new chapter was added to the Reserve Bank of India Act and the Urban Banks Department was established. After his tenure at the RBI, he held several positions before being appointed the Finance Minister. His tenure as Finance Minister was notable for the fact that he initiated liberalization and extensive reforms in India.
Dr. Manmohan Singh served as the Finance Minister of India from 1991 to 1996 which was a defining time in the economic history of independent India. His role in formulating the comprehensive policy for economic reforms has been appreciated by all. These years are known in India as an integral part of his personality.
He was honoured with many awards and honours
Among the many awards and honours received by the former Prime Minister, the most prominent ones are – India’s second highest civilian honour Padma Vibhushan (1987); Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award of the Indian Science Congress (1995); Asia Money Award for Finance Minister of the Year (1993 and 1994); Euro Money Award for Finance Minister of the Year (1993), Adam Smith Prize of Cambridge University (1956); Wright Prize for Distinguished Performance at St. John’s College, Cambridge (1955). He has been honoured by the Japanese Nihon Keizai Shimbun and other associations. Dr. Manmohan Singh has been awarded honorary degrees by Cambridge and Oxford and many other universities.
Led the country twice in a row
Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has represented India in many international organisations and conferences. He led the Indian delegation at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Cyprus in 1993 and the World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna. In his political career, he has been a member of the Upper House of the Indian Parliament (Rajya Sabha) since 1991 where he was the Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2004. Dr. Manmohan Singh was sworn in as Prime Minister on 22 May 2004 after the 2004 general election and became Prime Minister for the second time on 22 May 2009.
Former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh is known not only for his vision that made India an economic superpower, but also for his hard work and his humble, soft-spoken demeanour.
