ED attaches property worth crores of Roorkee institute in scholarship scam
Dehradun/Roorkee – ED has attached assets worth more than Rs 1 crore of Roorkee’s Vardhman Educational Society in connection with the scholarship scam. This society operates two technical institutes in Roorkee.
It is alleged that scholarships worth crores were embezzled by showing fake admission of Scheduled Caste-Scheduled Tribe (SC-ST) students in these educational institutions. Due to this the society acquired many types of movable and immovable properties. In this case, ED has already attached the properties of many educational institutions.
It is noteworthy that after the police investigation in this scam, ED had also initiated action under the Money Laundering Act (PMLA). ED had sent notices to all the educational institutions of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh and made inquiries. Now during the investigation in this case, ED has attached the immovable property of Vardhman Educational Society of Roorkee.
The value of this property is said to be around Rs 1 crore. This society runs educational institutions named Institute of Management Studies and IMS Institute of Technology in Roorkee.
According to the information received from ED, these educational institutions showed fraudulent admission of SC-ST category students. After this, he got scholarship from Social Welfare Department in the name of tuition fees and other charges. Some of this money was used to purchase properties. Whereas, some money was used by officers like chairman etc. Let us tell you that till now ED has attached properties worth crores of rupees of four educational institutions. It is being told that still there are more than 50 educational institutions on the radar of ED.
More than 100 cases were registered
Let us tell you that the scholarship scam came to light in the year 2017. SIT was formed in the year 2019 in this scam of more than hundreds of crores of rupees. The SIT registered more than 100 cases against several educational institutions and government officials in Haridwar and Dehradun. The police investigation in these cases is almost complete. In most of the cases, the police have also filed charge sheets against the accused in the court.
