Dehradun – On the occasion of the 171st birth anniversary of the great freedom fighter and former Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Abbas Tyabji, popularly known as ‘Chhota Gandhi’, on behalf of Abbas Tyabji Educational and Charitable Trust at Tasmia Academy, Dehradun. A program was organised.
National Vice President of the Trust, Dr. S. Farooq, while welcoming all the guests, said that Late Paripurnananda Painyuli was a former Member of Parliament who was also a freedom fighter and a member of Praja Mandal. He participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942 and was jailed several times, was the founding secretary and treasurer in October 2008 and worked for the cause throughout his life. He inspired me and since then we have been organizing the birth and death anniversaries of Abbas Tayyabji in Dehradun and Delhi. He also appreciated Advocate Anil Nauriya for his research and initiatives taken for this cause.
Chief Guest Justice Mehboob Ali Chairman JTRI. Lucknow in his address said that unfortunately we have forgotten our great freedom fighter Abbas Tyabji, who was born in a liberal visionary family of Baroda and moved to Britain when he was only 10 years old.
He was also the first Indian barrister and served in the Gujarat High Court and retired as Chief Justice of the High Court after 34 years of service. Soon after the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy he joined the freedom movement with Gandhiji, who was arrested in defiance of the Salt Act and declared his successor as acting President. He presided over the 11th session of Praja Mandal in Baroda. On this occasion, senior journalists Afzal Ahmed Rana, Mohammad Shah Nazar, Aftab Azmat, Mangesh Kumar, Chand Mohammad, Naveen Kumar, Ikram Ansari etc. were honored for their notable contributions.
Executive member Lieutenant Colonel MK Hussain told the complete history about the Trust working in the field of social service including women’s education. Rakesh Oberoi Chairman Oberoi Group of Motors and former Justice Abdul Qayyum Secretary S.P.C. Authority-Uttarakhand also presented its views.
Finally, Executive Member Dr. Daljeet Kaur Principal D.W.T. And S.J.A. proposed vote of thanks.
