People of Different Faiths Visit Mumbai’s Historic Jama Masjid Under ‘Profit for All’ Initiative

Report by Shibli Rampuri, Mumbai

Mumbai’s historic Jama Masjid witnessed a meaningful initiative promoting interfaith understanding, love and brotherhood, as people from different religious communities visited the mosque under the ‘Profit for All’ campaign.

The special ‘Masjid Parichay’ (Introduction to the Mosque) programme was aimed at providing visitors with an opportunity to understand the mosque, Islamic traditions and religious practices more closely, while also addressing questions and misconceptions they may have about Islam and Muslims.

Among those who visited Jama Masjid was Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, along with people belonging to different faiths. A large number of women were also part of the visiting group.

The visitors were warmly welcomed at the mosque and were taken around its various sections. During the visit, they asked questions about Islamic practices, worship and the significance of the mosque. Members associated with the Jama Masjid committee responded to their questions in detail and explained various aspects of Islamic traditions.

The programme also provided an opportunity to openly discuss misconceptions that sometimes arise about Islam and Muslim places of worship due to a lack of information or direct interaction.

The participants appreciated the initiative wholeheartedly, describing it as a commendable effort to strengthen mutual understanding and social harmony. They said that programmes where people from different faiths come together and learn about one another’s religious traditions can help remove misunderstandings and build greater respect and brotherhood.

Social worker Aamir Idrisi, along with Saeed Khan, Shakir Sheikh and several others associated with Jama Masjid, were also present on the occasion.

A Campaign Promoting Understanding and Brotherhood

The ‘Profit for All’ initiative has been organising various programmes in Mumbai for several years. One of its important activities is the ‘Masjid Parichay’ programme, under which people from different religious communities are invited to visit mosques and learn about Islam and Muslim religious practices.

The visitors are encouraged to ask questions freely, and their queries are answered through open and respectful dialogue.

At a time when misunderstandings can easily create distance between communities, such initiatives offer a positive message: understanding grows when people meet, communicate and learn from one another.

The visit to Mumbai’s Jama Masjid once again highlighted the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.

Different faiths may have different traditions, but love, humanity, respect and brotherhood can bring people together.
